United States Masters Swimming in North Carolina continues to grow, with a 2008 total of 961, our largest number ever. Swimmers 18 and above enjoy aquatic fitness at any level, from fitness to competitive. There are currently 26 teams ( in NC, we call them chapters, the official USMS name is "Work Out Group") from the mountains to the coast that offer various coached work out times. This web site has information on all of these teams, meet information, meet results, copies of newsletters, bylaws, and much more information from the Local Masters Swiming Committee (LMSC) of North Carolina

North Carolina's registrar will occasionally send e-mail regarding USMS events in North Carolina. These e-mails will come to you addressed by NC's registrar. Please make sure that you keep your e-mail address current. If you change your address from what you used when you registered this year, please notify the LMSC registrar, E-mail to our members will be kept at a minimum, and will only be used for information on our swimming programs. note: mail to links will be converted to java script on this web site in order to keep the addresses private from machines that harvest all e-mail addresses for sending spam, therefore, if you do not see a link, you need to enable javascript.

List of NC Teams and its Members

To see the team list for all teams in the state and then get information on those teams, click here, then click on the individual team to see pool, schedule, and cost information. Registration for the year 2009 began on November 1st, 2008. A registration form for each NC team is also available as well as a generic form that can be used for all teams except RAM, which has its own form.

A list of our members (names and work out groups only) and their team affiliation can be found on this site sorted by entire LMSC or workout out group. This list is updated immediately when a person registers. Remember, you must be registered for the year 2009 after January 1st with any team that requires insurance in order to participate in USMS functions.

Across the Lanes, LMSC newsletter

The The Fall 2009's issue is on line and will as mailed to those swimmers who did not indicate they wanted to receive the issue via email. Since the issues is mailed via bulk mail, if your address did not change, you should received your issue by early May.

The issue is only available in Adobe Acrobat pdf format for easy viewing and printing, identical to the printed version Download and View November 2009's Across the Lanes newsletter.

It is costly to print and mail newsletters, and not environmental friendly. The printed copies are not in color as is the online issue, if you have requested a mailed copy, and are satisified with reading it online, please notify NC's registrar and ask for an emailed copy only.


Top Ten and Records for North Carolina Swimmers

Thanks to Dan Schad who updates the records for all three courses. The individual events for the Short Course Yards and Short Course Meters records have been updated through November, 2007

The format is in tables of all records for each course. There is a table which contains links to the records and can be viewed by clicking the LMSC for North Carolina Swimmer's Records Link. Henry Stewart is our Top Ten Chairperson, providing those records to the National Top Ten Committee. Should you find an error, or have broken one of the existing records at a swim meet outside of North Carolina, please notify Henry directly at

Information on the USMS National Site

On the US Masters Swimming site there is a discussion forum page where anyone can participate. Swimmers can ask questions and/or respond to topics that are on the bulletin board. Just following some of the treads of the discussions is entertaining and informative.

Places To Swim, probably the most requested information for the traveling Masters Swimmer, is now on line and can be searched with your Netscape or Internet Explorer Browser.

LMSC Bylaws and Meet Manager's Handbook Available

The latest level of our LMSC's Bylaws is available on the web as information for our membership. Click LMSC BYLAWS if you want to download a copy of the March 2, 2009 (latest) approved version. You must have Adobe Acrobat reader installed to read them.

North Carolina's Meet Manager's Handbook which gives guidance and instructions for holding swim meets in accordance with the USMS and LMSC for NC rules is now also available. This document was published in January 1995 and mailed to those persons holding sanctioned USMS meets in NC. Click Meet Manager's Handbook if you want to read it.


Rules of Swimming

A copy of the current United States Masters Swimming Rules Book is available on the USMS web site. Anyone who plans to compete in a United States Masters Swimming sanctioned swim meet should be familiar with it. There is a section which defines the rules by which the strokes, turns, and finishes are judged click to download the pdf file. This is only one small section of the USMS rule book, but it is the section from where the "dq's" come. The entire 2008 Rules Book can be viewed on the USMS web site, in Adobe Acrobat Reader (pdf) format at http://www.usms.org/rules/
